LG LSM-100 Mouse

February 11, 2012

The miniaturization of electronics has meant that the inner workings of a mouse can be crammed inside a package that is much smaller than is ergonomically recommended for such a device. This has freed up mouse manufacturers to put some of that wasted space to good use by extending the capabilities of the ubiquitous pointing peripheral.

Like any good superhero, for the most part the LG SmartScan mouse masquerades as a normal computing peripheral most of the time but by tapping just one simple button situated on the left-hand side of the mouse, you can also scan any document up to A3-size with the device.

Equipped with optical technology LG character recognition, which converts scanned text into a Microsoft Word document. LG Smart Scan LSM-100 has a laser sensor for precise movement and smooth.

Scan results are available, can control every aspect of the format converted from JPEG, TIFF, PNG, PDF, BMP, DOC and XLS. XLS and DOC can be done because in this scanner comes with OCR (Optical Character Recognition). Optical Character Recognition (OCR) is a highly commendable feature of LSM-100 SmartScan that makes editing offline documents online all the more effortless.

LG LSM-100 can scan up to A3 paper size. As mouse, LG Smart Scan LSM-100 is equipped with a laser sensor. It is providing an ergonomic design with comfortable grip.

The idea of scanning something with an unsteady hand may not sound appealing but the technology inside the device means that you can literally swipe the mouse over the doc and it will appear on your screen as if you were wiping a window clean – then you just go over the areas you missed before.

It does feel like LG is creating a solution to a problem that isn’t really there with the LG SmartScan mouse but with our short try with the device it was great to use – and the time between scanning and it appearing on the screen was very short. The scans appear in 300dpi and the mouse also has text recognition on board.

These days computer users demand a lot; they need apps and software support to accept even a brilliant piece of hardware. LG has kept that in mind while designing the LSM-100 Smart Scan mouse. There are different options that allow you to paste, save, share and edit (there are contrast, brightness, rotation and cropping tools) the scanned document.

Highly advanced technology is not devoid of flaws; iPhones have proved that, SmartScan confirms it. Small documents like business cards are difficult to scan as the mouse tends to stick to the surface and move the document along while you try to swipe.

It is also a bit tricky to get smooth scanning motions unless you have a perfectly flat tabletop and a perfectly crisp document. The price also puts off a number of users who think the dual nature of its work is not worth the cash you need to dole out.

The company has claimed their LSM-100 Scanner Mouse will trigger the dawn of a “new era of scanners” but you can hardly argue back that this hi-tech rodent is anything short of revolutionary. Even on your table, you can clear out a lot of space by just replacing your ordinary scanner and mouse with this new age hybrid of the two.
